Buying a new designer purse for the modern wardrobe is no easy feat. 

Each season the glam gods and goddesses from Mount Fashion Olympus dispense the must-have list of bags for the faithful fashion followers. 

So how do you decide which purse to buy?  My faithful blow-me-away-purse-buying test never disappoints. Follow these rules and get a little closer to purse nirvana.

Rule # 1) Love at first sight.

The purse has to blow me away. It not only has to look amazing, but the sight of the bag has to take my breath away, and literally have me gasping for air.  Not quite orgasmic breathing - but if the bag doesn't make you shiver all over, no matter what the price - leave it in the store.

Rule # 2) Wardrobe fit is essential 

A real fashionista painstakingly plans her wardrobe purchases. Impulse handbag splurges are avoided if you know what accessories you need before hitting the boutiques.  I refuse to buy a purse that does not fit into my existing wardrobe and lifestyle, no matter how beautiful, fabulous or on sale it is.

Rule # 3) Not too trendy, darling 

You're the star of your own trek down life's runway, not a style copycat duplicating the latest celebrity handbag trend.  So if Naomi Campbell, the Olsen Twins and Victoria Beckham are carrying a Louis Vuitton and its fake cousin is available at Knockoffs-R-Us; Just say NO.

Rule # 4)  How do I look?  

A handbag is something you wear, not just a carry-all for lipstick, keys and a Blackberry. I'm 5 feet tall and a curvy size 12, so a huge shoulder bag will add a few pounds to my hips that Jenny Craig couldn't reduce. I don't shy away from a big bag, I just make sure that it doesn't overpower my voluptuous frame.

Rule # 5) Shop alone. No fashion-loving girlfriends allowed

Buying a purse with your girlfriend or female sibling is a no-no. If you have the same taste, deep down inside you'll be a little miffed if your fashionable friend buys the same Prada bag.  Later on, you'll have to coordinate when you'll both wear it and risk the chance of looking like the accessory twins.  You don't need a fashionable friend to cosign your handbag purchases. If you have any doubts...back away from the purse.

From selecting the essential ladylike purse straight from the pages of your favorite magazine - to feeling the weight of an ornate metal clasp pressed against your female form - there's nothing like cradling a new handbag in your arms.  If the bag of your dreams of still blows you away after following my 5 purse buying rules - head to the register fast - it's a keeper.
